Vista Family Health, located at 2585 Hendersonville Road in Arden, was started in 2003 and has quickly grown to a five-doctor practice serving over 9,000 patients. The medical practice is comprised of all board-certified specialists in family medicine and graduates of the MAHEC family practice residency program.

Vista Family Health is committed to providing patients with convenient access to high-quality care. We believe that providing quality care is not only about the medical advice that we dispense, but more importantly about the relationships we have with our patients. We continue to strive to be a leader for innovative medical practices and are one of the first physician offices in the area to offer online health services to our patients.

Bi-lingual communication in both English and Spanish is vital to our practice's culture of care. Three of our physicians, the front-desk staff and the majority of medical assistants are bi-lingual. Approximately one-fourth of our patient population is Spanish-speaking.

Vista Family Health is a part of Mission Medical Associates, the physician group practice of Mission Health System.

Andrew Runkle

Andrew W Runkle MD

Description:

Dr. Runkle is from Lancaster, Pa., and he co-founded Vista Family Health in 2003 with Dr. Robert Fields.

Why did you decide to specialize in family medicine? I wanted to practice in a primary care field. Working with patients of all ages interested me, as did the variety of what patients face throughout the day. I also enjoy that in primary care, you have a big focus on disease prevention.

What attracted you to practice in Asheville? I came to the mountains for my internship at Mission and fell in love with the area.

What are your special professional interests? A large part of my work is devoted to adult chronic disease management, such as helping patients manage their diabetes and high blood pressure. I also enjoy the interpersonal aspects of providing health care and am a strong believer in the fact that how you relate and communicate with your patients affects their care. Building long-term relationships with people is one of the reasons I am practicing family medicine.

What are your personal interests and hobbies? I love my family and sing in our band, The Lost Gospels, with Rob (Dr. Fields). I also enjoy writing music, running and gardening.

Stephanie Gillis

Stephanie E Gillis MD

Description:

Dr. Gillis, originally from Charlotte, NC, joined Vista Family Health in 2006. She speaks Spanish and English.

Professional Societies: Buncombe County Medical Society, American Association of Family Practice Physicians

Why did you decide to specialize in family medicine? I was initially interested in both family medicine and OB/GYN, but I knew I really wanted to keep caring for kids after they were born and that I wanted to take care of the whole family. Family medicine gives me that complete picture of patient care, and allows me to work with a patient from infancy to geriatric care.

What attracted you to practice in AshevilleI was really attracted by the community, which is very diverse. It offers anything you could ever want to do outdoors. Asheville just has a lot to offer but yet with a small-town feel.

What are your special professional interests? I enjoy caring for Spanish-speaking patients. I love all aspects of family medicine, from working with the youngest baby to the oldest geriatric patient. Women's health also is of great interest to me.

What are your personal interests and hobbies? I like most outdoor activities - biking, hiking, canoeing, you name it. And of course, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
