Mission Hospital Update Regarding Baby Lily

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 2, 2012) - Mission Hospital confirmed that Lily Kerr, the twenty-month old baby girl who was admitted to Mission Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, died today.

"Prior to her arrival on Wednesday morning, Lily had sustained traumatic brain injury and appeared to be brain dead when she was admitted," said Susan Mims, MD, Vice President and Medical Director of Mission Children's Hospital. "After a series of tests yesterday to determine brain death, Lily met all the criteria for brain death. However, after confirmation of brain death, she was observed to take a spontaneous breath, so she remained on life support through the night. Today, Lily's family requested that we remove her from life support. We are very sad to report that earlier this afternoon, without the aid of a ventilator, Lily Kerr died. It is her family's wish that her organs be donated to provide other children with an opportunity for life. The family has requested privacy during this extremely difficult time."
