ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Dec. 20, 2013) – Mission Foundation announced today that it has received a $3,000 CVS Caremark Community Grant, a program that was created by CVS Caremark as part of its commitment to building healthier communities.
The support from CVS Caremark will help Mission Hospital’s Stroke Outreach Program expand stroke education and screening services to 16 counties in western North Carolina. Mission’s Stroke Outreach Program serves those counties in western North Carolina identified as high risk, or those counties with higher death rates related to stroke. Screenings are organized for senior centers, low-income housing units and other rural community centers. Participants are educated on the significance of hypertension, weight and other health factors that greatly increase their personal risk for a stroke.
“Given the geographic terrain of western North Carolina, it is often difficult for our residents in outlying communities to receive adequate stroke screening services,” states Danielle Martin, Mission’s stroke outreach coordinator. “Receiving the CVS Caremark Community Grant allows us to expand services and reach those vulnerable populations.”
“As a pharmacy innovation company, we are committed to helping people on their path to better health and we believe that optimal community health starts with education and awareness,” said Eileen Howard Boone, Senior Vice President, Corporate Philanthropy & Sustainability, CVS Caremark. “We are proud to support the work that Mission’s Stroke Outreach Program does in the region and we look forward to working with them in fulfilling their program’s mission.”
Mission Foundation was selected to receive a grant through the CVS Caremark Community Grants 2013 application process. Grants were awarded to programs that raise awareness of important health issues, focus on chronic disease management and offer training and other tools that communities need to help them on their path to better health. The goal of the CVS Caremark Community Grants Program is to help build healthier communities.
