One in ten Americans are taking antidepressant drugs, and the World Health Organization predicts that by the year 2030 more people will be affected by depression than by any other health condition.  Dr. Weil’s “Spontaneous Happiness” explores a variety of scientifically proven strategies from Eastern and Western psychology to counteract low mood and enhance contentment, comfort, resilience, serenity and emotional balance.  Dr. Weil, who has struggled with moderate depression himself through mid-life, investigates how we got here, what we can do outside of traditional medicine to start feeling more content and how we can sustain this contentment through life’s inevitable dark patches.

Dr. Weil graduated with a medical degree and an undergraduate degree in biology (botany) from Harvard University. He is the founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where he is also Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health. As a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, he is an internationally recognized expert on integrative medicine, medicinal plants, mind-body interactions and the future of medicine and health care.

In addition to his public talk, Dr. Weil will deliver the keynote address on Oct. 20, 2012, at the fifth annual Partnering Western Medicine and Integrative Healthcare Conference, which is sponsored by MAHEC and Mission Health.
