Why Volunteer?

"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself."

–Ralph Waldo Emerson,
19th Century Philosopher, Essayist and Poet

Spend any time with Mission volunteers and you will hear this sentiment echoed over and over again. As Emerson recognized more than a century ago, it is a wonderful reality that when we help those around us, we often receive so much more in return.

Our volunteers choose to work here for a variety of reasons. Some understand firsthand how overwhelming a hospital stay can be and want to help patients and their families feel more at ease. A number of our volunteers are active retirees who serve Mission as a way to stay involved in the community. At the same time, we have volunteers who are college students, and even high school students, who share their time with us to learn more about healthcare and what it is like to work in a hospital.

Whatever the motivations may be, our volunteers are an invaluable part of the Mission team and the overall Mission experience.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Mission volunteer. We invite you to learn more about our program, and if you have any questions, please contact us by calling (828) 213-1057 or stop by our offices, located on the first floor of the Memorial  Campus.
