HIT Squad - Our HELP-IN-TIME volunteers ("HIT Squad") are "on call" volunteers. They offer support on an as-needed basis for special projects. Duties may include folding letters, filing, making packets, copying and/or shredding documents, office coverage and many special projects. The HIT squad is a good option for people who can't commit to a specific day.

Waiting Areas - Waiting area volunteers act as supportive liaisons between staff and family. Volunteers visit with patients' families, relay updates from clinical staff as appropriate and provide general information and directions about the hospital. This position is great for those who like working directly with people.

Patient Deliveries - These volunteers are out and about in the hospital assisting patients by delivering flowers, mail, magazines, etc. This is a great placement for volunteers who like to be physically active.

Gift and Bean Shops - Some of our volunteers prefer working in non-patient-related areas. Gift and Bean Shop volunteers assist with selling, pricing and stocking merchandise. This placement requires an ability to engage customers. Familiarity with retail is helpful, but not required. As with all areas, training will be provided.

Guest Services Desks - These volunteers assist patients and visitors by answering questions, providing directions and relaying basic patient information. The Guest Services Desks provide an essential function and are a highly visible and rewarding place to volunteer. Good customer service skills are essential.

Child Life in Pediatrics - These volunteers enhance customer service by assisting the Child Life Department to offer comfort and relief to pediatric patients and families through play, arts and crafts, storytelling and games in the playroom and at bedside. The minimum commitment for Child Life Volunteer is 6 months and 100 hours.  College students seeking service hours for a Child Life Practicum should contact 828-213-1792.

Volunteer Visitors - These "ambassadors" for the hospital visit patient rooms, welcoming patients and their families, providing general information, answering questions and responding to any special needs or requests identified in the visit. It is a good opportunity for anyone with great customer service and communication skills and a desire for one-on-one interaction with patients.

Clerical/Analytical - These volunteers provide clerical and/or project assistance to departmental staff. Tasks may include filing, organizing, copying, phone reception, making packets, computer work and data analysis. Assignments are based on your background, training and interest level to ensure a good fit. From former secretaries and professionals to volunteers with no previous experience, we have an office environment to suit any background.

Heart Center Volunteers - These volunteers serve as a resource to family members in the Heart Center lobby. They are good at listening without being inquisitive and are able to be courteous and understanding while offering comfort and support. Heart Center volunteers may also help patients by escorting them to their cars upon discharge from the hospital. Volunteers in this position must have excellent communication and people skills.

NICU Volunteers - These volunteers serve in various capacities in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. NICU volunteers perform important tasks like helping with laundry, sorting and stocking donation items, performing clerical duties, running errands, and greeting and assisting families and visitors. Volunteers will occasionally have the opportunity to hold and cuddle the infants.

Volunteer Station/Escort Desk - These volunteers act as ambassadors for the hospital, providing various services to visitors, patients and staff. These services can include welcoming visitors and patients, escorting them to their destinations, escorting discharged patients to their vehicles, transporting lab specimens and meal trays, and performing other miscellaneous duties. These volunteers are invaluable in making sure everything runs smoothly. No treadmill necessary after a day in these areas!

Volunteer Guides - These volunteers seek out guests in public areas (lobbies, hallways, waiting rooms, etc.) who may be lost or unsure of their way. Volunteer guides clarify directions and escort guests to their destinations whenever possible. This is a great position for people with a good sense of direction and excellent communication skills.

Junior Volunteers - Mission understands how valuable volunteering can be to the growth and personal development of young people. That's why we offer volunteer opportunities for students between the ages of 14 and 18 through our Junior Volunteer Summer Program. For more information, please contact our Volunteer Specialist at (828) 213-1055.

Rathbun House - Volunteers are vital to the success of The Rathbun Center and make The Rathbun Center a "house with a heart". Front Desk Volunteers must commit to a 3 hour shift and be comfortable encountering families experiencing a medical crisis, be flexible, be attentive to detail, self directed and welcoming to persons of different backgrounds staying in our home.
