Life support classes keep nursing staff members up to date with the skills needed to help care for patients when they stop breathing or their heart beat stops or becomes abnormal. The following classes are taught using American Heart Association guidelines.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) covers the steps in helping adult patients in emergency situations. The advanced skills of using electric shock to the heart, helping the patient breathe and giving emergency medications are included.
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) centers on helping infants and children in emergency situations. The advanced skills meet the needs of the smaller bodies of these age groups.
BLS (Basic Life Support) covers basic skills to help victims of all ages in life-threatening emergencies. Using a machine called AED that automatically gives an electric shock to the heart is included.
